Overview

Althea Lake is a 43-acre warm-water lake in Tyngsborough that drains north into Mascuppic Lake. Much of its shoreline is marsh, so development is limited to part of the south shore.

Fishing

Limited reports suggest a good largemouth bass population with the occasional larger fish, and access limits likely keep fishing pressure low. Althea has produced award-size largemouth bass.

Species

Species found in MassWildlife surveys: largemouth bass, chain pickerel, yellow perch, white perch, black crappie, bluegill, pumpkinseed, brown bullhead, golden shiner.

Regulations

MassWildlife freshwater fishing regulations apply: https://www.mass.gov/freshwater-fishing-regulations. Confirm current seasons, limits and any special rules there; this page is not a legal source.

Licensing

Anglers 15 and older need a Massachusetts fishing license (MassWildlife).

Access

DCR manages an unimproved cartop launch at the end of a short trail in Lowell-Dracut-Tyngsborough State Forest. Park at the state forest gate at the end of Althea Ave. (respect private property) and carry your boat in. Shore fishing is limited to areas near the launch.

Water facts

43 acres; average depth 5 ft; max 16 ft; vegetation often rings the shallows.
