Overview

Sudbury Reservoir, in Southborough and Marlborough, holds back the Sudbury River across 1,240 acres. It is held in reserve as a backup supply for Boston plus 50 more communities. Its entire shore is protected watershed land with no development. It averages 12 feet deep (60 max) and has few weeds.

Fishing

A big, undeveloped shoreline gives walk-in anglers plenty of room. Award-size largemouth and smallmouth bass; chain pickerel; and black crappie, yellow and white perch, and sunfish have all come from Sudbury.

Species

MassWildlife surveys found largemouth bass and smallmouth; chain pickerel; and black crappie, white and panfish such as bluegill, pumpkinseed, redbreast sunfish and yellow perch; and yellow bullhead.

Regulations

MassWildlife freshwater regulations apply: https://www.mass.gov/freshwater-fishing-regulations. Check local town or DCR rules for access fees and restrictions.

Licensing

A Massachusetts freshwater fishing license is required for anglers 15 and older.

Access

DCR's Division of Water Supply Protection manages the reservoir. Boats aren't allowed; walk in to fish from shore through the gates around the perimeter. Access closes seasonally and extra water-quality rules apply, so check with DCR before you go.
