Overview

Wickaboag is a panfish pond in every season. White perch are everywhere, and some top a pound. The 320-acre great pond sits just west of West Brookfield center, north of Route 9. It's shallow (8 ft average, 13 max) with light-brown water. Weeds are scarce except at the shallow northern tip. Cottages and homes crowd the shore, so expect a busy lake in summer.

Fishing

Summer and hard-water panfishing are the main draw. Crappie and yellow perch are less common than white perch but can run large. In spring and early summer, anglers turn to bass and pickerel. Award fish include largemouth bass; chain pickerel; panfish such as black crappie, sunfish, white perch and yellow perch; and bullhead.

Species

MassWildlife surveys found largemouth and smallmouth bass; chain pickerel; and panfish such as black crappie, bluegill, pumpkinseed, redbreast sunfish, white perch and yellow perch, brown and yellow bullhead; and banded killifish, golden shiner and white sucker.

Regulations

MassWildlife freshwater regulations apply: https://www.mass.gov/freshwater-fishing-regulations. Check local town or DCR rules for access fees and restrictions.

Licensing

A Massachusetts freshwater fishing license is required for anglers 15 and older.

Access

The town beach off Cottage Street (southeast corner) has a concrete ramp and a big lot. You'll need a town beach sticker to park, and there are only 7 trailer spots. Cartop boaters and shore anglers can use the Wickaboag Valley Road right-of-way on the northeast shore, parking at the gravel pull-off. Be careful climbing over the guard rail. Ask the town of West Brookfield about fees and rules.

Ice fishing

A good bet for panfish through the ice, especially white perch (MassWildlife).
