Overview

Locals call it South Pond. Lake Quacumquasit straddles the Brookfield-Sturbridge line about 3 miles north of Route 20. It is a deep (31 ft average, 73 ft max), clear (about 12 ft) 218-acre great pond. Weeds are patchy except at the north end, where the Quaboag River flows in. Roughly 80% of the shore is homes and cottages, and summer brings power boats, water skiers and sailors.

Fishing

South Pond is one of the state's better summer trout waters. Cold, oxygen-rich water lets some stocked trout hold over and pass 5 pounds. MassWildlife manages it as a special brown trout water, so check the current Hunting and Fishing guide for its brown trout length and creel limits. Pike stocked in nearby Quaboag Pond sometimes wander in, and crappie fishing has been excellent lately. The award roster includes largemouth and smallmouth bass; and chain pickerel and northern pike, yellow and white perch, black crappie, sunfish, and brook, brown, rainbow and tiger trout.

Species

MassWildlife surveys list largemouth and smallmouth bass; and chain pickerel and northern pike, yellow and panfish such as black crappie, bluegill, pumpkinseed and white perch, brown and yellow bullhead; and alewife, American eel, banded killifish, golden shiner and white sucker. Trout are stocked every spring and fall.

Regulations

Special brown trout water: check MassWildlife's current Hunting & Fishing guide for South Pond's brown trout length and creel limits. Statewide rules: https://www.mass.gov/freshwater-fishing-regulations.

Licensing

A Massachusetts freshwater fishing license is required for anglers 15 and older.

Access

MassWildlife runs a concrete ramp off Lake Road at the north end, with parking for about eight trailers. You can also fish from the small beach beside the ramp. Contact MassWildlife's Central District for details.
