Overview

Peters Pond, in the Forestdale section of Sandwich off Route 130, regularly gives up big holdover trout. The 136-acre great pond averages 25 feet deep (53 max), with very clear water, often 22 feet. The bottom is mostly sand with few weeds. Houses, a gravel pit and an RV park share the 2.9-mile shore.

Fishing

Thanks to its cold water, you can catch trout year-round. Spring and fall are best, and many anglers switch to bass in summer. Award fish include brook, rainbow and largemouth and smallmouth bass; tiger trout; and panfish such as sunfish and yellow perch.

Species

MassWildlife surveys found largemouth and smallmouth bass; chain pickerel; panfish such as pumpkinseed, white perch and yellow perch; brown bullhead; and American eel, golden shiner and white sucker. Trout are stocked every spring and fall.

Techniques

When the water warms, look for trout in 25-35 feet.

Regulations

MassWildlife freshwater regulations apply: https://www.mass.gov/freshwater-fishing-regulations. Check local town or DCR rules for access fees and restrictions.

Licensing

A Massachusetts freshwater fishing license is required for anglers 15 and older.

Access

MassWildlife's paved trailer ramp is off John Ewer Road on the southeast arm, with parking for about 15. You can also launch at Oakcrest Cove, the town property that was once Hewlett Packard's, with a beach, playground and skate park. Parking there costs a fee in swim season. Shore fishing is allowed on town conservation land east of that beach. Contact MassWildlife's Southeast District or the Town of Sandwich for details.
