Overview

Halfway Pond covers 233 acres just west of Long Pond and Route 3 in Plymouth. It is the headwaters of the Agawam River and also supplies water to local cranberry bogs. Much of its shore is protected by the Halfway Pond Wildlife Management Area and conservation land. The island in the middle is a Nature Conservancy research preserve, open only with prior permission. The pond is sandy-bottomed and clear (up to 10 ft), averaging 10 feet deep and 15 feet at most, and weeds grow mostly east of the island.

Fishing

The latest MassWildlife survey found largemouth outnumbering smallmouth, good-sized white and yellow perch, and plenty of bluegill and pumpkinseed. Award-size largemouth and smallmouth bass; chain pickerel; and black crappie, yellow and white perch, sunfish and bullhead have all come from here.

Species

MassWildlife surveys found largemouth and smallmouth bass, chain pickerel, yellow and panfish such as bluegill, pumpkinseed and white perch; and alewife and white sucker, fallfish, American eel, banded killifish, golden shiner and tessellated darter.

Regulations

MassWildlife freshwater regulations apply: https://www.mass.gov/freshwater-fishing-regulations. Check local town or DCR rules for access fees and restrictions.

Licensing

A Massachusetts freshwater fishing license is required for anglers 15 and older.

Access

The Wildlands Trust keeps an unimproved cartop launch on Mast Road on the west shore. Turn onto Mast Rd. from Long Pond Rd. across from Waverly Oaks Golf Club, because some roads on online maps are closed to cars. The launch has room for only two or three cars, and the last stretch is rough and unmaintained. A 10-car lot sits about half a mile back. Trails in the conservation area, plus Halfway Pond Rd. and West Long Pond Rd. via the WMA, reach long stretches of shoreline. MassWildlife's Southeast District can answer access questions.
