Overview

MassWildlife ranks Sheep Pond in Brewster, off Route 124, among the best trout ponds in Massachusetts. The 152-acre great pond averages 30 feet deep and reaches 64, with clear water to about 20 feet. Sand covers the bottom and most of the 2.6-mile shore. Wooded bluffs and hills surround it, with only a few permanent homes. The pond's long axis runs with the prevailing southwest wind, so it can get rough.

Fishing

Sheep Pond holds lots of cold water through summer. Stocked trout roam the whole pond most of the year, then drop into 35-45 feet when it warms. Most fish are current-year stockers, but several big holdovers are caught each summer. Don't overlook the smallmouth either, since large ones are reported regularly. Award fish include largemouth and smallmouth bass, yellow and white perch, bullhead, sunfish, and brook, brown, rainbow and tiger trout.

Species

MassWildlife surveys found largemouth and smallmouth bass; panfish such as pumpkinseed, white perch and yellow perch; brown bullhead; and banded killifish and golden shiner. Trout are stocked every spring and fall.

Techniques

In summer, fish for trout in 35-45 feet of water, where the cold water is.
