Overview

At 111 feet deep, Long Pond in Plymouth ranks among the deepest ponds in Massachusetts. The 227-acre kettle hole averages 45 feet deep, with clear water (about 18 ft visibility) over sand and rubble. Groundwater and a stream from Little Long Pond feed it, and it seeps out underground toward Halfway Pond. Year-round homes and summer camps line most of its 3.3-mile shore.

Fishing

Deep, cold, well-oxygenated water lets stocked trout survive the summer and grow over several seasons, so big browns are caught here regularly, mostly by trolling. In spring and fall trout can turn up anywhere. In summer, look for them in 30-60 feet of water. Smallmouth bass are the overlooked bonus. The award list is long: largemouth and smallmouth bass; chain pickerel; black crappie; and white catfish, yellow and white perch, bullhead, sunfish, and brook, rainbow, brown and tiger trout have all qualified for the Freshwater Sportfishing Awards Program.

Species

MassWildlife surveys list largemouth and smallmouth bass, yellow and panfish such as bluegill, pumpkinseed and white perch; brown bullhead; and American eel, banded killifish and white sucker. Trout are stocked spring and fall.

Seasons

Spring and fall: trout anywhere. Summer: troll 30-60 ft for holdover trout.
