Overview

Whitin Reservoir, also called Wallis Reservoir, dams New Canal Brook to form 358 acres of water in Douglas. It averages 14 feet deep (28 max), and houses line part of its shore.

Fishing

The reservoir has produced award-size largemouth bass, chain pickerel and black crappie for the state's Freshwater Sportfishing Awards Program. With limited parking and only a carry-in launch, it's a quieter option for paddling anglers.

Species

MassWildlife has no recent survey of Whitin Reservoir. Its award-fish record shows that largemouth bass, chain pickerel and black crappie live here.

Regulations

MassWildlife freshwater regulations apply: https://www.mass.gov/freshwater-fishing-regulations. Check local town or DCR rules for access fees and restrictions.

Licensing

A Massachusetts freshwater fishing license is required for anglers 15 and older.

Access

Bring a canoe or kayak. DCR's unimproved dirt launch is at the Wallis Pond trailhead off Wallis Street, with just a few parking spots by the gate. The Wallis Pond Trail and other Douglas State Forest paths lead to the shoreline.
