Overview

Ponkapoag Pond is a shallow, weedy 216-acre great pond tucked into the Blue Hills Reservation, about half a mile from both Route 128 and Route 138. It averages only 4 feet deep (8 ft max). Marsh borders the southeast and west shores, and forest covers the rest.

Fishing

Expect lots of action rather than trophies: bass, pickerel and panfish are abundant. As summer goes on, weeds choke the shoreline, so a canoe or kayak makes a big difference later in the season. The pond has produced award-size chain pickerel and largemouth bass.

Species

MassWildlife recorded largemouth bass, chain and redfin pickerel; panfish such as black crappie, bluegill and pumpkinseed; and golden shiner.

Regulations

MassWildlife freshwater regulations apply: https://www.mass.gov/freshwater-fishing-regulations. Check local town or DCR rules for access fees and restrictions.

Licensing

A Massachusetts freshwater fishing license is required for anglers 15 and older.

Access

Look carefully for the small DCR lot off Randolph Street; it is easy to miss. From the gate, carry your boat about 150 feet to the cartop launch and shore fishing area on the south shore. Motors are not allowed. Blue Hills trails reach the whole shoreline, so foot anglers have plenty of options.
