Overview

Lake Massapoag is a popular summer lake in Sharon, roughly a mile below Route 27. The 392-acre great pond is clear (about 10 ft), averages 16 feet deep and reaches 48. Its gravel and rubble bottom has boulder fields, some close to the surface and usually buoyed. Weeds are mostly limited to the south and west coves, and homes ring the shore.

Fishing

Massapoag is a two-bass lake. Find the boulder fields and you'll find both largemouth and smallmouth, often with perch hanging around the same structure. Pickerel stick to the weedier coves. Award fish include largemouth bass; chain pickerel; panfish such as black crappie, sunfish and yellow perch; bullhead; and white sucker.

Species

MassWildlife surveys found smallmouth and largemouth bass, chain pickerel, white and panfish such as black crappie, bluegill, pumpkinseed and yellow perch; and American eel. Trout are stocked each spring.

Hotspots

Boulder-strewn areas (watch the buoys); weedy south and west coves for pickerel.

Regulations

MassWildlife freshwater regulations apply: https://www.mass.gov/freshwater-fishing-regulations. Check local town or DCR rules for access fees and restrictions.

Licensing

A Massachusetts freshwater fishing license is required for anglers 15 and older.

Access

Sharon's big concrete ramp at Memorial Park (Pond St., north shore) requires a town sticker to park. Without one, drop your boat at the ramp and park at the high school across the street. At the south end, town land off Community Center Drive allows cartop launching and shore fishing; parking fees may apply.
