Overview

Lake Secession is a reservoir of about 1,450 acres in Abbeville County. Its dam on the Rocky River was a WPA project finished in 1940 by the City of Abbeville, and the lake backs up about six miles of the river, below Broadway Lake and close to the backwaters of Lake Russell. The dam also serves a small hydroelectric station. The lake is fertile, and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources rates its largemouth bass and black crappie fishing as excellent. The crappie fishing is especially well regarded and is considered one of the best in the upstate. Catfish, redear and bluegill fishing is good too, and in spring white bass run into the headwaters, which is an unusual chance in this part of the state. Public access is at the Highway 184 landing near the upper end of the lake. Jug fishing is legal here, which is allowed on only a handful of South Carolina lakes.

Regulations

Jug fishing is legal on Lake Secession with marking, permit and daily time rules, and a largemouth bass minimum length limit applies. See the South Carolina rules for Lake Secession: https://www.dnr.sc.gov/lakes/secession/regs.html
