Overview
Lake Richard B. Russell is a 26,650-acre U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reservoir on the Savannah River between Lake Hartwell and Clarks Hill Lake. Shoreline development is regulated, and the Georgia Wildlife Resources Division calls it one of the more pristine reservoirs in Georgia. WRD lists largemouth bass, spotted bass, black crappie and striped bass as best bets. Largemouth and spotted bass populations have leveled off, and WRD points largemouth anglers to Beaverdam, Coldwater and Pickens creeks. Standing timber, main lake points, river channel markers, offshore humps, riprap and fallen trees are productive cover, and in winter bass often follow large schools of baitfish in deeper water.
