Overview

Lake Chauncy is in northern Westborough off Route 9. Its shore is lightly wooded and mostly protected: much of it borders the Wayne F. MacCallum Wildlife Management Area or Westborough conservation land. The 182-acre great pond averages 14 feet deep (21 max) over muck with some rubble, sand and gravel. Clarity can be poor, especially during occasional algae blooms. Weeds are abundant, mostly in the shallow coves on the west and north shores.

Fishing

Largemouth are plentiful, and the west shore's heavy cover is the place to find them. Panfish are abundant, and some bullhead top a pound. Award fish include largemouth bass; chain pickerel; black crappie; and brown bullhead, and white and yellow perch.

Species

MassWildlife surveys found largemouth bass; chain pickerel; panfish such as bluegill, pumpkinseed, white perch and yellow perch; brown bullhead and yellow bullhead; and landlocked alewife and white sucker. Tiger muskie are stocked occasionally when available; see MassWildlife's pike and tiger muskie stocking page.

Hotspots

Access

On the north shore, Westborough has an unimproved cartop launch and lots of shoreline on the old state hospital grounds off Lyman Street. Contact MassWildlife's Central District with questions.
