Overview

Whalom Lake is a 103-acre great pond in Lunenburg and Leominster, about 3 miles east of Fitchburg near Route 13. It's clear (visibility averages about 17 feet) and fairly deep, averaging 19 feet with a 44-foot maximum. It sees heavy recreational use because it's close to Leominster and Fitchburg.

Fishing

MassWildlife calls the spring trout fishing excellent, especially from shore along Lakefront Avenue. It's stocked with trout each spring, and Cast The Water's MassWildlife records also show an Oct. 6, 2026 stocking. Bluegill and pumpkinseed can be large and fun on light tackle, and yellow perch grow a bit faster than average. Big bass and pickerel are harder to find because the lake is less fertile than similar ponds.

Species

MassWildlife surveys found largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, chain pickerel, yellow perch, rock bass, bluegill, pumpkinseed, brown bullhead, yellow bullhead and banded killifish. Award fish recorded here include largemouth bass, chain pickerel, black crappie, rainbow trout and brook trout.

Seasons

Trout fishing is excellent in spring. Ice fishing for yellow perch can be productive.
