Overview
Jordan Lake is a 13,942 acre reservoir in Chatham County, about 30 miles west of Raleigh, formed where the Haw River and New Hope Creek come together. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers impounded it in 1982, and it now supplies drinking water to eight municipalities and helps control floods down the Cape Fear River. The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission has surveyed the lake's largemouth bass since 1983 and describes a healthy population that anglers harvest lightly. Commission work also points to excellent largemouth bass and black crappie fishing, and to a healthy native white catfish population that has held up even with flathead catfish in the lake. Much of the shoreline is part of Jordan Lake State Recreation Area, which has seven access areas and more than 1,000 campsites. A private marina near the Crosswinds area rents fishing boats, and bald eagles can be seen around the lake.
