Overview
Goose Pond on the Lee-Tyringham line is two ponds in one. The 263-acre main basin connects by a small navigable channel to 61-acre Upper Goose Pond, a favorite of paddlers and swimmers because its shore is undeveloped. Both are infertile and very clear (about 17 ft), with rubble bottoms and few weeds. The main pond averages 23 feet deep (48 max) and the upper pond 15 feet (33 max). Houses thin out from the moderately built-up west end toward the wild upper pond.
Fishing
Goose Pond is managed first for trout. It stays cold and oxygenated through summer, so stocked fish carry over from year to year, and with good forage the trout fishing is excellent. The smallmouth are plentiful too, mostly 1-2 pounders. Award fish have included largemouth and smallmouth bass; chain pickerel; panfish such as sunfish and yellow perch; and bullhead, and rainbow, brown, brook and tiger trout.
Species
MassWildlife surveys list largemouth and smallmouth bass; chain pickerel; panfish such as bluegill, pumpkinseed, redbreast sunfish and yellow perch; brown bullhead; and golden shiner and white sucker. Trout are stocked spring and fall.
Regulations
MassWildlife freshwater regulations apply: https://www.mass.gov/freshwater-fishing-regulations. Check local town or DCR rules for access fees and restrictions.
Licensing
A Massachusetts freshwater fishing license is required for anglers 15 and older.
Access
MassWildlife's concrete-pad ramp is at the end of Ridge St. on the west shore, just north of the outlet. Parking is only along the shoulders of Ridge St. and Cooper Town Rd. When those fill up, the approach to the ramp gets tight for trailers. Shore fishing is limited to the area near the launch (MassWildlife Western District).
Water facts
Main pond 263 acres (average 23 ft, max 48 ft); Upper Goose 61 acres (average 15 ft, max 33 ft); clarity about 17 ft.
